BTEC Extended Diploma in Dance

Aim: The aim of this course is to develop your dance abilities by teaching skills and techniques as well as personal and social development, preparing you for either Higher Education or the world of work.

Course Content: This course is delivered by Eastern School of Performing Arts (previously Wildcats Academy).  It is made up of mandatory and specialist units that include:

Mandatory Units:

  • Performance Workshop
  • Performing Arts Business
  • Historical Context of Performance
  • Rehearsal for Performance
  • Performing to an Audience
  • Dance Performance

Specialist Units:

  • Singing for Dancers
  • Choreographing Dance
  • Jazz Dance
  • Urban Dance
  • Classical Ballet
  • Contemporary Dance
  • Physical Theatre
  • Working Freelance in the Performing Arts Industry
  • The Healthy Performer

Progression Opportunities

Undertaking a Level 3 qualification with a working theatre school will give you the experience within college time but it will also give you the opportunity to get involved in work experience, large scale performances and shows in the West End. Successful completion of this course will enable you to go on to higher education, performing arts work or teaching in the industry.

Additional Information

You will be expected to commit to rehearsal schedules and some additional hours in order to gain experience within the theatre school. There will also be the opportunity for work experience in both teaching and performing.

You will be required to wear theatre school uniform for classes and have black plimsolls or jazz trainers, character shoes and ballet shoes  You will also need a character skirt (girls) and leotard. There may be some additional costs to cover theatre trips, official scripts and professional workshops.

The BTEC course has been developed to reflect the needs and interests of those who wish to pursue a career in the performing arts, specifically Dance.  Wildcats aims to work with these students to give them confidence to reach their potential and achieve their goals and ambitions.

Entry Requirements: 5 A-C grades, an audition and attendance at a taster day.  Students will be expected to perform two of the following audition pieces (Dance students can perform 2 dance pieces if they wish):

  • Dance routine (Ballet, Contemporary, Modern, Hip Hop or Jazz)
  • Dance routine (an alternative style from what was chosen above)
