Course Aims: The programme provides students with the skills, knowledge and insight to enable them to make a contribution to the Musical Theatre industry with a focus on subject specialism in the form of work related learning.

It presents opportunities for students to develop personally and professionally to meet their future aspirations. Additionally it prepares students for progression and further study at BA (Hons) Level through a top up year.

Entry Requirements: At least: 200 UCAS points, a Level 3 Extended Diploma with an MMP profile, or 3 A Levels at grades C or above (or equivalent). An interview and audition will also be required. Mature students who may not have formal qualifications are encouraged to apply for an interview where you will be considered in relation to your experience, enthusiasm and commitment.

Course Content and Units

Year 1: Dance for Musical Theatre, Acting for Musical Theatre, Singing for Musical Theatre, Musical Theatre Performance, Creative Arts Research Skills, Commercial Dance, Project Design, Implementation and Evaluation, Creative Arts Professional Practice

Year 2: Dance for Camera, Singing Techniques and styles, Popular Entertainment, Managing a Creative Business, Work Based Experience., Preparation, process and production in the Creative Arts, Performing Arts Workshop Leadership

Assessment process:

Students undertaking this course will be expected to provide a range of evidence of their learning. This includes: Showreels, Journal/Log Books, Rehearsal and Performance Evidence, Written Essays, Projects and Presentations. There are no exams in the HND however students taking the top up year may need to take examinations to achieve the BA (Hons).

Resource information:

Students will need to be able to access a range of information from a variety of sources.  A reading list is provided once an offer of the course is accepted.  Students will attend Wildcats Academy in Stamford for 3 days per week and undertake independent study outside these times.  Some elements of the course will require greater attendance, for example just before a large show.

Progression information:

Upon successful completion of this course, candidates can apply to a range of institutions across the country to ‘top up’ to a full BA. Acceptance onto these courses is at the discretion of the Institution offering the top up.

They will also have the opportunity to apply to Theatre/Dance Schools for further professional training. Students completing this course will be prepared to go out into the world of work – into local or regional theatres as performers, or to develop their own Performing Arts businesses – teaching either privately or in schools and educational establishments.

Trips and Events:

A number of trips and visits are available as part of this course including trips to perform in the UK.
Students will be expected to attend a number of performances throughout the year.

work based learning & Employability skills:

The course includes work experience and also performances in both local and regional theatres.
